Titus Andronicus
Headphone Highlights
XL Recordings, New Jersey
Titus Andronicus formed in Glen Rock, New Jersey in 2005. Glen Rock is the kind of small town that forces you to make your own scene (or move away swiftly) if you are as into music as the folks in Titus Andronicus were from early on, so their singer Patrick Stickles started to have shows in his basement and it might be remnants of that communal spirit that made the ranks of Titus Andronicus swell up to eleven at some point. A lot of their music reflects their mixed emotions about their home state (and the concept of home as such), and by the time they recorded 'The Monitor' that resulted in an album that combines all that with a plot loosely connected to the civil war, a guest list that would make for a fine party in any basement and songwriting that applies a love for screaming loudly over a big racket with ambitious songwriting drenched in the history of Jersey rock music from Ted Leo back to a certain Mr Springsteen. In the process they have find ways to infuse a conviction that there's no hope at all with joyful abandon.
