NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR (art)

The Nominees are:

Hana Shimada

HANA SHIMADA

Patient penciller Hana Shimada creates tributary portraiture of musical non icons as seen through her eyes and portrayed through her lead. Pencil and portraits are rarely the site of artistic experimentation but somehow Hana weaves a world of her own in the faces of others. She’s more than a bit special.

Jordana Maisie

JORDANA MAISIE

Jordana Maisie is a Sydney based Photo and New Media Artist working in video, sound and interactive installation. She engages with the theory behind different ways of seeing and different ways of being, using technology to create a space where the audience interacts with these ideas, without getting too freaked out by the prospect. Having already built a great dialogue around her work this year, we reckon in 2009 this bright spark will really start to shine.

Perran Costi

PERRAN COSTI

This installation artist/designer has been winning prizes and recognition galore this year. Seemingly coming out of nowhere, Perran draws on a broad range of influences and skills including photography, video design, audio sculpture and installation. His current work explores the relationship between place and memory. He’s exhibited all over Sydney (at Underbelly, Anode, Art on the Street and Newtown 2042) & also in Milan.

Greedy Hen

GREEDY HEN

The first time we saw a Greedy Hen poster we ripped it off a public wall and put it up in our bedroom. We then found out that this artistic duo also do installation pieces, work on their own projects like the series of Greedy Hen Artist books and make record covers. Not tied to a specific medium, Greedy Hen traipse through the image library of their brains to make detailed visual narratives that are both beautiful and kinda weird.

Brown Council

BROWN COUNCIL

Brown Council make performance and video works that appropriate, imitate and remix a range of disparate images and ideas from popular culture, cinema and television. Earlier this year they donned skeleton suits, drank a litre of milk and pulled off some horrendous hip hop moves, performing Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’ in as close to a literal translation of the song as possible. Amazing, no?
