FBI MP3 - JULY 2004

Okay, people ... if you believe everything idiots are ever likely to tell you, then you'd think MP3s were the work of the devil, designed to destroy the music industry like some digitial Godzilla. Well, thankfully. we're smarter than that and know the difference between a distribution revolution and ripping people off. Surf around a little and you'll find heaps of artists, record labels and weblogs offering legal MP3 downloads - all designed to give you a taster of some new music. If you like your free sampler, you go and buy the album. Simple.

So next time someone tells you digital downloads are a pox on music, direct them right here! This is where we give you a free MP3 sampler of some of SYDNEY's finest! If you like what you hear, get to record store and get some more.

WANT TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN MUSIC? If you're a Sydney artist, band or producer (signed or unsigned) we want to hear from you. Select a track that you think best represents your music and that you're happy for FBi members to download at no charge. The only proviso is that you must host the mp3 file yourself (either on your own web site or your label's site etc). Email us a link to the file (NOT the mp3!) with some bio info and a photo to members@fbi.org.au, or drop a CD in the post to FBi ONLINE, PO BOX 1962, STRAWBERRY HILLS, NSW 2012.

 GAUCHE

Gauche - live indietronica from Sydney:

Jane Sheldon (vocals)
Alon Ilsar (drums, EAPP - homemade electro-acoustic, percussive pads)
Julian Curwin (guitar, korg MS2000)
John Maddox (double bass, effects, korg MS20)
Luke Dubber (keys, korg MS2000)

Alon and Julian play with crime/surf/sleaze boys Darth Vegas, both have played with Monsieur Camembert, John plays with Tooth, the Pedestriens and gypsy singer Nadja, Luke is one half of Hermitude and Jane is a soprano from a contemporary music background. We started playing jazz together about 2 1/2 years ago then soon realised that we were mutually obsessed with electronica and dumped the jazz. Our sound is the result of that strange meandering path of influences.

debut album coming soon ...

 THE MODEL SCHOOL

Bursting onto the anti-folk-rap-rock-paisley-blues-underground-indie-country scene with a vigour rarely seen in today's popular music supermarket, The Model School have arrived. And not too soon by the
looks of things.

In a world drowning in its own reality, The Model School have taken it upon themselves to look through the ground that we're all walking on. With songs about such diverse subjects as cosmetic surgery, cats and beer there's no way you could get bored listening to the Model School. They even have songs about songs!

With a heavy emphasis on heavy lyrics which fool you with simplicity and subtle chord progressions the Model School are determined to please punters at any cost.
So if acoustic/fuzzed up/pop/rock/poetry is your thing (by way of Dylan,Beck and the Eels), then get out your Sunday best and get down to see The Model School. Open since 2004.

 MANY ARE HERE

Many Are Here are a five piece band from Sydney, Australia. Born from many diverse musical projects, the band continues to strive for a new and fresh approach to writing and performing. They have set about re-introducing more collaborative writing through a blend of 'post-rock' intellect and 'prog-rock' whimsy. Holing up in a second-hand car workshop for rehearsals, the new songs have been infused with expansive sound leant by the space. The intent for the band will be to continue the touring and recording of past efforts, with shows ranging from the odd pub gig support to 'theme' based headlines in venues outside of the normal (eg art spaces, stores). The aim is for each new show to incorporate a particular aspect of MANY ARE HERE, whether it be semi-acoustic intimacy, ambient sonics, pure rock or collaborative work with fellow artists.

Track review:
'Opening with a beautiful guitar and bass lick "Wesir" by Many Are Here is somewhat ambient and experimental even though there isn't much electronic about it except for the amp's and the microphone. Never the less it's a piece that soothes.
