LEAH FRASER

Leah Fraser is an artist currently living and working in Sydney. "I studied at the College of Fine Arts in Paddington and has been a practicing artist for the three years since graduation. In general, my aim is to create worlds informed by the imagery of folklore and primitivism, merging imagination and magic with the beauty of realism and nature. I like to incorporate a series of metaphors in my work. I tend to focus on portraiture, but here animals and nature are interchangeable with human qualities. For me, my portraits represent something close to childhood, dreams, nighttime and wilderness: symbols of what it is to feel fully alive, to feel wild. These heightened states are woven in with themes of mysticism and magic. In this way I attempt to merge reality with the subconscious so that we encounter dream-like subjects."

SAMUEL HODGE

“Hodge’s photos seem to come into being on a different clock, a schedule both at odds with his day-to-day life and firmly embedded within it. The camera, often, isn’t even there. It’s not in his bag, nor is it slung over his shoulder. Recently, on a spontaneous combustion trip to Melbourne, a few of us, his friends, noticed the camera at his feet one afternoon. I didn’t see it again. That’s partly why the photographs he takes are so compelling. Often, they’re very casual, a snapshot of twilight outside a window, and then another snapshot of twilight outside the same window, and another and another. Within the context of the rest of his work, one wonders if there’s another man in the apartment behind Samuel – his feet sticking out of a blanket perhaps, or a girl making tea or petting a small dog. The photos drift in and out of each frame, a rambling life caught up in a moment of stability.” – Kate Jinx

THE KINGPINS VS FBI

The Kingpins are Angelica Mesiti (b.1976), Técha Noble (b.1977), Emma Price (b.1975) and Katie Price (b.1978).

Forming in 2000 to participate in a Sydney nightclub drag-king competition DKSY, the Kingpins took out the title with a collaboration that has continued within the nightclub, the gallery, the museum and the street.

The Kingpins are a collective of four women whose shared creative practice is articulated through a process of critiques and drag actions. Within the tradition of drag, vehicles of performance and humour are employed as a critical tool to engage complex social, political and sexual territory. By utilising notions of drag as both a way of intervening with and reframing (and symbolically claiming) specific sites, they link drag performance with architecture and public space, imparting new readings and abstract mythologies to elected environments.

A free play of aesthetics, style codes, gender and pop-cultural dress ups are used within a conceptual framework to provide a critical, sometimes humorous, other times horrific discourse between the constructs of identity, and its surrounding landscape of the political and the poetic. Their installations create multi-faceted video clips that unfold into invented worlds of performative interventions and sculptural landscapes. Their live performance returns the video clip to the stage, reconfiguring horror, costume and choreography into multiple musical fabulations.

Performance, video and installation are combined with photography, fashion, graphic and sound design to bring to life a practice within the tradition of drag and beyond, with creations ranging from nightclub performance, gallery exhibitions, collaborative projects, museum commissions and public interventions.

The Kingpins have performed and exhibited widely both nationally and internationally and are represented by Kaliman Gallery, Sydney.

Anthony Lister

ANTHONY LISTER

Australian artist Anthony Lister (b.1980) has experienced a rapid ascension to the heights of success. Having graduated from the Queensland College of Art, Lister promptly moved to New York to complete a mentorship with the artist Max Gimblett. From here, Lister’s work and profile quickly developed with international recognition.

Now permanently based in New York, Lister’s time is spent traveling and exhibiting around the globe with continued sell out success. His paintings, drawings and sculptures confront and discuss contemporary issues of pop culture, media saturation, the highs and lows of a modern and ever changing world. It is his astute observations of living combined with an innovative, refreshed and highly individualized technique that makes his works so appealing. He pulls on the parts of life that both inspire and daunt us, that appeal to our desire for fantasy and the ever media-nurtured human condition of ‘wanting more’.

As much a participant as he is a spectator, Lister utilizes all forms of communication from youtube through to his work in the streets right through to the gallery walls. Opening the discussion rather than offering a resolution Lister explains, "I am not trying to change the world... I am just reacting to a world that is trying to change me".

MS. & MR

Ms. & Mr. is the cumulative dialogue between Stephanie and Richard nova Milne that has spanned the years since they met in 1998. Interested by the relational mechanics of functioning as a composite, they acknowledge this pursuit as a romantic proposition. Important is their admission to, and misappropriation of scientific theories that remain in the realm of practical fiction. The artists have mined family archives of VHS cassettes, photos and drawings that document their respective childhoods. They transform these materials, often inserting themselves into each other's documented 'memories', artificially extending the length of the couple's shared history in an attempt to create relational scenarios otherwise impossible. Ms. & Mr. are currently undertaking their Master of Fine Arts by research at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, and have recently returned from Paris after a 3 month residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts.

Mel O'callaghan

MEL O’CALLAGHAN

Born 1975, Sydney, Australia
Lives and works in Sydney and Paris (FR)
O'Callaghan produces video and sculptural installations where exercises in space, movement and form evoke alternate worlds, potential realities and parallel environments. The work challenges our perception of the way we interact with our surroundings, highlighting the unstoppable and far-reaching change inherent in every element of human existence and the natural world (molecular, planetary, psychological). Underpinned by sophisticated formal qualities and O'Callaghan's training in architecture, the art offers experiences of spatial systems where matter is always fragile and its behaviour is always uncertain. Eschewing the traditional practice of engaging with an idea, medium or form before 'advancing' on to another, O'Callaghan views her entire practice as interconnected. Video is often exhibited as sculpture; subjects in video are treated in a sculptural manner.

TRENT WHITEHEAD

Trent Whitehead is known as a painter / sculptor. He was born in 1980 in a small surf town north of Sydney, Australia. He now works out of his studio in Sydney where he works predominantly in ink and acrylic on wood. Trent Whitehead’s latest body of work centers around a series of hand crafted 3d wooden masks. Each character seems about to burst with some intense expression of anger, frustration or joie de vivre. The intensity of the masks captures the effervescence of the artist himself, pooling the experiences of his existence to breathe life into inanimate wood, like a vagabond Giuseppi to a badass Pinocchio. Trent's exquisitely patterned and narrative works explore the effects of extinction in a fantastical world of horned creatures and bearded villains.
